Unspooky Skeletons

It’s a blessing to bump teeth when kissing
because it’s the only time
(probably)
that your bones
will ever directly touch their bones

Skeletons are not spooky
skeletons are the truest thing about you
most gravestones, at this point, are just marking the location of skeletons
but we still say “Here lies Ada Connor”
The person!
Whereas if you took the skeleton out of Ada Connor
and you think about … the goop that’s left …
I mean …………….
identity becomes a lot more marginal, doesn’t it?

what I’m saying is
if the human form is like a log
then the skeleton is a treasure that can only be accessed
with a lot of loving and careful whittling

now see
time’s got a knife
and nothing but herself

and it’s honestly kind of sweet
how devoted she is
to digging you out of there
